Difference between a dual 2 and dual 4 subwoofer

on December 21, 2023

If you're looking to upgrade your car stereo, you may come across a lot of technical terms that may sound complex. One of the most frequently asked questions is about the dual 2 and 4 ohm subwoofer. Choosing a model suitable for your particular situation will ensure that you achieve superior sound quality.

The one you have always wanted to have to play your favorite songs In this article, we will explain the differences between a 2 ohm dual subwoofer and 4 ohm subwoofer. This way you can get the perfect option for you.

What is a dual subwoofer?

Dual subwoofer uses two subwoofers in your car audio system. It is usually associated with a smoother bass response and eliminates single-track localization. It makes you feel like you're wrapped in a bass blanket. It also reduces phase cancellation, so you can eliminate boomy sounds or bass dead zones.

This speaker delivers the deepest, fullest and most impactful low frequency experience. It also amplifies the bass when you don't have much space. In the market, you will find out that most subwoofers mainly come with two ratings: 2 ohms or 4 ohms.

The ohm represents impedance. It refers to the effective resistance of the electrical circuit or component within the subwoofer to alternating current. In simpler words, a subwoofer needs electrical resistance to produce a stronger and deeper bass effect.

Main differences between a dual 2 and dual 4 subwoofer

The dual 2 ohm subwoofer has a lower electrical resistance. This features a louder sound as it can draw more power from your amplifier. There are some drawbacks with 2 ohm subwoofers. For example, due to high power consumption, the sound quality is not as good as 4 ohm subwoofers.

On the other hand, the dual 4 ohm subwoofer has high resistance. This means that while it is quieter than its 2-ohm counterpart, it consumes less power and can deliver clearer sound without distortion and most of the time, more durable.

Let's look at other more specific differences

Impedance

When choosing subwoofers, you'll look at the ohm, the SI unit of electrical resistance, which tells you how much energy the subwoofer will be able to hold and how much it can transform into sound.

As we mentioned before, the 2 ohm subwoofer has a lower electrical resistance but can obtain more power through the amplifier. This makes it produce a stronger and deeper bass effect.

On the other hand, the 4 ohm subwoofer has a higher electrical resistance, they will use much less power and therefore will last longer than the subwoofer with lower resistance.

Series Vs Parallel Wiring

Both subwoofers can be wired and connected in series, parallel or both. This way the required impedance is obtained, that is, the amount of energy it needs.

For example, wiring two 2 ohm subwoofers in series becomes a 4 ohm load. Series wiring allows you to configure multiple woofers on one amplifier with acceptable impedance. You can connect both coils in series for higher impedance.

A 4 ohm subwoofer with its coils connected in parallel presents a 2 ohm load to its amplifier since this produces more voltage at a lower impedance, connecting in parallel ensures that you get the most performance from your amplifier.

Sound quality

As we mentioned before, a subwoofer with a lower electrical resistance produces a louder sound than one with a high electrical resistance, which means that 2 ohm subwoofers are louder than 4 ohm subwoofers.

Although they are louder, 2 ohm subwoofers are also more likely to produce poorer sound quality due to their power consumption. In 4 ohm subwoofers, however, the sound produced could be described as more compact and of better quality, but not so much that it is easily noticeable.

Equipment Branches

When a 4 ohm subwoofer is paired with a 300 watt per channel amplifier, for example, it produces an output of 300 watts. On the other hand, when it is 2 ohms with the same amplifier, the watts can reach 600. This can create excellent sound, as long as the amplifier is stable at 2 ohms, or the subwoofer power is less than 600 watts.

Conclusion

Both of the dual subwoofers 2 ohm and 4 ohm can deliver excellent sound quality with respect to bass response. You must carefully choose the best option for your particular use case.

The most important thing is to take into account the rest of your audio system setup, in order to avoid damage and achieve the best possible performance, ensure the minimum impedance of your stereo or amplifier.
